Water Systems

Water: we drink it, bathe in it, paddle and swim in it, convey our waste with it, and so much more. We’re blessed with an abundance of water in our region, but we need to pay attention to how we take care of our natural and human-constructed infrastructure systems that affect it.

  • The New River is the defining characteristic of our region, and Renew the New is the organization dedicated to conserving and improving its health and ecological integrity for all to enjoy.

  • Developed in September 2011, this plan describes sources, uses, projected demands, and future plans for managing water resources in the New River Valley, including the counties and municipalities which are part of it. The plan was developed by the New River County Regional Commission.

  • The New River Water Trail, presently developed and used extensively in Giles County, is in process of being expanded eastward to Claytor Lake. Read more about this effort here.

  • In 2008, the New River Valley Regional Commission received a grant to develop a regional scale review of existing wastewater treatment capacity and current and projected demand. The documents resulting from that study are available for review here.
